"The Pandyas" a heritage made in stone and temple carvings

Madurai is home to several famous temples, the most renowned being the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The goddess Meenakshi is considered the most significant deity of Madurai. According to the Periya Puranam, a part of Tamil literature, the beauty of Goddess Meenakshi is described in great detail, portraying her as an avatar of  Devi parvati . It is also believed that Lord Shiva himself came to Madurai and married Goddess Meenakshi here and assumed the title of Sundara Pandyan. The temple is widely known for its stunning architecture and the sacred Pond of Golden Lotuses.

Apart from the Meenakshi Amman Temple, other significant temples near Madurai include Kal Azhagar Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is considered as one of the divyadesams and Thirupparankundram and Pazhamudircholai, both dedicated to Lord Muruga. These two Murugan temples are part of the Aarupadai Veedu, a set of six sacred temples where Lord Muruga is believed to have performed various divine feats as i have mentioned in my last post about swamimalai temple in kumbakonam. 

1. Meenakshi Amman Temple

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most famous temples in Madurai, known for its architectural grandeur. It was later rebuilt by Thirumalai Nayakar, who preserved much of its original structure and design. This temple is unique because its main deity is Goddess Meenakshi, whereas in most temples dedicated to Shiva, the primary deity is Lord Shiva himself. Although the Periya Puranam mainly speaks about Lord Shiva as the ruler of Madurai, in this temple, Goddess Meenakshi holds the central position in this but there is a separate shrine dedicated to lord shiva in this temple he is  also called sundarapandian in this temple .

2. Thirupparankundram

Thirupparankundram is one of the Aarupadai Veedu temples of Lord Muruga and is considered the first among them. According to the kanda purana, this is the place where Lord Muruga  set off for Tiruchendur to defeat the demon Surapadman. It is believed that the Devas (celestial beings) lost a battle against Surapadman and prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Eventually, Lord Muruga fought and defeated Surapadman. This temple is also significant because it is believed to be the place where Lord Muruga married Deivayanai, the daughter of Indra, the king of the Devas and also this is the very first house of the aarupadai veedu according to the skanda puranam.

3. Pazhamudircholai

It is a temple dedicated to lord Muruga called Pazhamudircholai where he is worshipped mainly and it is also a part of the arru padai Veedu it’s a set of temples where he is worshipped mainly because he defeated the asura surapadman and his brothers tarakasura and Simha muka who actually were troubling the devas it is actually said that this was the result of their karma where they actually sided with Daksha when he orchestrated a yagna to humiliate lord Shiva because of which lord shiva punished the devas by taking the avatara of veerabhadra and in the end he fought and defeated the devas one by one including the chief among them such as indra vayu agni and surya and other devas for siding with daksha and also ended it with beheading daksha i noticed 2 sculptures in the temple of tenkasi vishvanathar depicting the scene where he is fighting daksha the same sculpture can also be seen in the temple of madurai meenakshi amman too and also kali and many forms of lord shiva too .

4. Kal Azhagar Kovil

This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is significant because Vishnu is believed to be the brother-in-law of Goddess Meenakshi. It  Kal Azhagar Kovil is also famous for its exquisite architecture. Many devotees visit this temple, especially during the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar wedding festival, which symbolizes the divine marriage of Meenakshi and Lord Shiva. According to legend, after this marriage, Lord Shiva started the Pandya dynasty lineage It strongly unites shavism and vaishnavism together because in this case lord Vishnu is the brother in law for the godess here during the last days of the tirukalyanam festival of madurai the people enjoy it with love and also display various forms of art and dance forms to show their love towards the marriage of lord shiva and godess meenakshi in the form of rituals and various arts and dance forms at the end of the festival it is said that this festival was created by tirumalainayakar to unite both saivism and vaishnavism together instead of seperating the worship of Vishnu and shiva

6. Rameshwaram - Ramanathaswamy   Temple

The Ramanathaswamy Temple is located in Rameshwaram district and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. This temple is particularly famous because it is believed that the linga inside was installed by Lord Rama and sita . Rameshwaram is also known as the place from where Lord Rama built the famous bridge to Lanka to rescue Sita, his wife. Additionally, this place is notable as the birthplace of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It is also said that this is the place where Lord Hanuman made his legendary leap to Sri Lanka. "There is also a temple where you can see a piece of the floating rock that the Vanaras used to build their bridge to Lanka."

It is believed that Rama actually  wanted to consecrate a linga brought all the way from kailasa  so he instructed hanuman to go and get one but time was running out so sita had to make a linga out of sand in order to pray to lord shiva over here this is the legend about ramanatha swamy.

These are some of the temples I have visited near Madurai and Rameshwaram.It doesn't end here.

Recently, 

I saw some new temples in the town of karaikudi famous for the karaikudi chettiar who were traders and the whole region of Pudukkottai is famous for them because they were mostly traders who went to other countries both for trading and buying and selling new items 

It is a town located near both Madurai and Karaikudi called Pillayarpatti, known for the temple of Karpaga Vinayagar. A temple dedicated to lord Ganesha this is one of the masterpieces of the chettiar community and i also happened to visit 2 more temples one that is dedicated to bhairavar also called vairavar  kovil worshipped by the chettiar and a temple called Kundrakudi  dedicated to lord muruga  for the chettiars of karaikudi  During my recent journey, I had the privilege of exploring one of the true masterpieces crafted by the Chettiar—a testament to their architectural grandeur and devotion. The intricate carvings, majestic pillars, and timeless beauty of their culture left me in awe and offered a glimpse into the rich heritage preserved by generations of this renowned community.In addition to this remarkable site, my itinerary included visits to two other captivating temples, each with its unique significance. The first was a temple dedicated to lord shiva, also known locally as Vairavar Koil.My spiritual trail then led to another temple devoted to Lord Muruga called kundrakudi murugan koil it is a temple that is on a hill The atmosphere here was charged with devotion, and the temple’s colorful sculptures  added to the enriching experience. Together, these visits deepened my appreciation for the diversity and spiritual richness that define the temple culture of this region. It inspired a deeper reverence for the artistry namely the fact that some of these temples  were maintained by the chettiyar community particularly the fact that some of these temples were the kula devas of the Chettiyar community—mostly Pillayar Patti and Vairavar koil. The devotion that shapes South India’s temple landscape. Namely due to the architecture and the condition of the temples.The Chettiyars, who made Karaikudi famous, were primarily merchants trading goods far and wide. They are also known for their palatial homes—some of which have been opened to the public or converted into heritage resorts. But since we are focusing on temples, let me start with pillayarpatti It is a small town located near both the Madurai and Karaikudi districts, famous for a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Also known as Pillayar in Tamil Nadu . The town is renowned for its Karpaga Vinayagar—a unique form of Ganesha. He is worshiped by the chettiars of karaikudi In fact, the town is named after him. Then there is a temple dedicated to lord shiva called vairavar coil it houses deities such here this is also a kula devata of the chettiyar community .

Then there is kundrakudi murugan temple it is a temple located in the town of kundrakudi the temple is normally found on top of a hill here and it is also a famous temple in the karaikudi district

 6 .UTHIRAKOSAMANGAI MANGALANATHAR SWAMY

this temple is located in the district of ramanathapuram which is close to town of rameswaram that is situated in the coast of tamilnadu and it is very famous for this very temple in fact it attracts many tourists it is a temple that is dedicated to lord shiva it is also believed to be the very first lord shiva temple usually every shiva temple in tamilnadu always contain a shrine for the Navagrahas or the nine planets of the solar system but unlike every temple this one doesn’t have any Navagrahas at all this is the beauty of this temple and in-fact when you go to the main shrine of lord shiva you can usually find the 63 Nayanmars who propagated Shaivism in tamilnadu most notable of the Nayanmars are Sundarar Manickavasagar thirugnana sambandar and thirunavukkarasar these 4 Nayanmars are actually famous in all the shiva temples in tamilnadu but over here you can literally see their birth star in this temple and it is also known for its maragatha Nataraja a form of lord shiva over here you can actually worship him with thalam poo it is a flower that is connected with one of his forms called lingothbavar i already explained about this form in my previous blog in the temples of Trichy Tiruvannamalai and kumbakonam.

The uniqueness of this temple is there is a small shrine that is dedicated to the form of Nataraja of lord shiva what is unique about this form is in this temple alone it is believed that the idol is made out of pure emerald stone and they will only show it at one particular month and he is also found in raja alankaram always this is the uniqueness of this very temples .

7. TIRUCHENDUR MURUGAN TEMPLE:

this temple is actually the 2nd arupadai veedu of lord muruga and it is also believed that this was the place where he defeated the asura surapadman who was pestering the devas the town of tiruchendur is closer to thoothukudi that is also a town that is known for its pearl harvesting since its actually close to the sea and the temple of tiruchendur is known to be crowded during the month of thaipusam because many people come and tend to visit and worship the god muruga here and also to see the temple it is very famous because of this it is also believed that lord Muruga came in the dream of a local fisherman of that area and told him to find the idol which was found deep in the ocean .

 8. TIRUNELVELI NELLAIAPPAR :

It is a temple that is dedicated to lord shiva  that is closer to the towns of tiruchendur and also famous for tirunelveli halwa that is found there and also its temple as well the temple is known for its beauty and also its carvings and sculptures particularly of warriors and kings who contributed to its architecture and its beauty i fell in love with its architecture very much that is why i am writing about it the weird part is it actually this temple has a quality that many people have noticed such as if you enter the temple  and tap on some of its pillars it actually produces a sound such is the mystery of this temple and it corresponds to the ragas of music the same is said to be found in the temple of airavateshwarar the only difference is the staircase that you find when you enter the temple corresponds to the ragas of music. i didnt write about this in my previous blog cause i am yet to visit the temple of airavateswarar. after i visit it i will write more about it for now usually in any temple you will find the yali carved in every shiva temple but in this temple it is literally carved on the pillar itself i found this so beautiful so i have a picture of me standing next to this animal and a king

   

9 . Tenkasi viswanathar :

This temple is one of the famous Pandya marvels famed for being connected to the famous kasi viswanathar a temple rooted in legend as being the place where lord shiva considers as home it is also considered as the kasi of the south so famous that many people always wish to visit this temple first then only the seat of lord shiva namely in tamilnadu it is home to many intricate carvings and also the famous falls of kutralam that is mentioned in the Tamil literature as it consists of waters that heal almost every ailment because it water that flows flows from the rocks on that side is said to touch certain healing herbs that grow on that part and it is known to attract millions of tourists who tend to go that side mostly for relaxing  this is one of the beauty of the temple I actually saw statues of some gods namely that of Veerabhadra and kamadeva even his consort Rati Devi and also statues of the five Pandava brothers namely that of Arjuna ,Bhima,yudishtra nakula and Sahadeva that I found to be weird this was one of the beauty of this temple and the carvings were massive and also he is very famous over here when it comes to tamilnadu and many people tend to visit this temple when they want to visit kutralam.

SHANKARANKOIL :

This small town, located near the Tenkasi district, is famous for a truly unique temple. It is renowned for housing Sankaranarayana Swamy, a rare form where Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are depicted as one: Vishnu on the left and Shiva on the right. This deity serves as a powerful reminder that Shiva and Vishnu are one and the same.

In addition to its intricate carvings, the temple is distinguished by its presiding goddess, Gomathi Amman. According to legend, a Pandya king was traveling through the area when his horse accidentally stepped on an anthill. Upon investigation, the king discovered a Shiva Lingam hidden beneath it. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the king's dream and commanded him to build a temple around the Lingam, leading to the creation of this sacred site.

 SRIVILLIPUTHUR ANDAL TEMPLE :

This is a temple that is dedicated to andal who was a great bhakta of vishnu the temple is located in the town of srivilliputhur that is close from madurai and the famous town of rajapalayam dedicated to andal a devotee of vishnu who expressed her devotion to vishnu through love and also it is said that her father who was a great devotee of vishnu always placed a garland that he was going to make for the lord of vaikuntha she in turn took it and wore it as an act of devotion in fact this act of love towards vishnu was so great that in the end he actually loved her very much and he also married her in the famous temple of sri rangam that is located in the trichy district of tamilnadu and vaikuntha became her home in fact she sang a set of songs that are still sung today when it comes to the month of margali and her temple is very famous during this year and also famous for the sweet known as the palkova it is a sweet made of milk this is the lore behind this very temple.
